How can science and technology help us in better assessing disaster impacts?

This event will discuss the following topics:

1) Common terminology for exposure and vulnerability data applied to disaster loss data.  
Strong efforts have been placed in the last years in defining a common taxonomy that would enhance the standardization and the interoperability of DRR datasets. This common taxonomy should also be used to collect and store data from past events. 

2) Use of historical data on disaster impacts into risk assessment and mapping: Predicting the future requires good knowledge of the past and current situation.  
Data availability, quality and heterogeneity make it difficult to use currently available disaster loss data for risk modelling. 

3) Presentation of the approach in creating a wide national Sendai-related network in Finland. The Network engages all relevant stakeholders of decision-makers, central bureaus, research and third sector voluntary organisations who have obligations in preparedness, response, data collecting and reporting. The network aims to to build a common understanding of benefits of the so called comprehensive security concept. The network develops the data architecture and best practices to overcome the common obstacles of exploiting existing data.
