Thematic Session: Strengthening Resilience Through Data

This session will highlight the critical role of data in resilience building. The discussion will focus on how comprehensive risk data collection, analysis and application underpins effective decision-making, facilitates monitoring and reporting through the Sendai Framework Monitor, and supports loss and damage tracking as well as global adaptation efforts. Role of data in loss and damage mechanisms like the Santiago network will also be discussed. By examining these relationships, the session aims to underscore the necessity of robust data practices for advancing resilience and adaptation initiatives worldwide and contributing to the central, transformative promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to ensure no one left behind.

This session will address three main objectives:

  1. Importance of data: Discuss the significance of data collection and analysis in tracking loss and damage, and its application for improving resilience and adaptation planning (e.g. through the Sendai Framework Monitor, CCRI-DRM Risk Assessment). This includes exploring national frameworks for reporting and emerging indicators of global adaptations and risk areas.
  2. New perspectives on inclusive approaches: Offer insights into inclusive approaches to data collection, with a focus on disaggregated data collection that considers gender, disability, and other equity factors in reporting impacts. A specific focus on identification, inclusion and impact of focusing on data on child and youth vulnerabilities will be presented.
  3. Identified opportunities for capacity building and technology transfer: Explore opportunities for enhancing capacity building and technology transfer to support effective data collection efforts, especially in the context of loss and damage tracking and global adaptation strategies.
