Raising and realizing the climate ambition through scaled-up disaster risk reduction at COP29
As the world faces escalating climate impacts, we are at a critical juncture where decisive action is needed to safeguard our future. The year 2023 has already marked the hottest year on record, with a dramatic rise in devastating climate-related disasters. Against this backdrop, the upcoming COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, offers a vital platform to address these challenges comprehensively.
This session will focus on the integration of disaster risk reduction within the broader framework of climate action as a key strategy for building resilience and advancing climate ambitions. By highlighting the importance of policy coherence and demonstrating how DRR measures should align more effectively with climate adaptation strategies for comprehensive resilience, the session aims to promote a coordinated approach to managing risks.
The session will also introduce the Santiago Network on Loss and Damage, as a critical initiative to support countries most vulnerable to climate impacts in addressing the adverse effects of climate change by integrating DRR and climate change elements into national strategies, to manage and mitigate more effectively loss and damage.
Aligned with COP29’s overarching theme, “In Solidarity for a Green World,” this session seeks to underscore the importance of inclusive and ambitious climate actions that go beyond mitigation and adaptation.
